Are you still on the default Osnap setiings?
Hold down shift key and right mouse key same time. Take the Osnap settings option from the popup menu. Tick the select all box.
Now you have many more useful Osnaps such as mid point.
Nearest and perpendicular should be used to measure distances between 2 parallel lines, avoiding errors which might be caused by measuring mid point to mid point.
